Two uninhabited islands, two binding maritime settlements, two very different downstream stories. Katchatheevu (285 acres, Palk Strait) was recognised as Sri Lankan under the 1974 India–Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Agreement and the 1976 follow-on agreement. Rockall (600 square metres, North Atlantic) was made subject to a 1988 UK–Republic of Ireland accommodation delimiting fishing rights around it. Both cases involve a small state and a large fishing neighbour; both cases have generated recurrent political friction. The difference is what happened to the fisher community after the ink dried.
