முப்பத்தாறு தத்துவம்The Thirty-Six Tattvas

Classical Śaivism enumerates 36 tattvas — constituents of reality — descending from Śiva-tattva (pure consciousness) through Śakti, Sadāśiva, Īśvara, Śuddhavidyā, the māyā-tattvas, the puruṣa-tattvas, the tanmātras, and finally the mahābhūtas (the five gross elements). It is not a mythology. It is a structured descent diagram: each tattva is generated by a specific veiling-operation on the one above it. Read structurally, it is a symmetry-breaking cascade.

§01 What the schema actually is

The 36-tattva architecture is the spine of Trika Śaivism and, in a slightly different ordering, of Śaiva Siddhānta. Sanderson (1988) gives the canonical scholarly account; Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka and Davis (1991) on Śaiva Siddhānta map the parallel Tamil-South-Indian usage. The first five (the Śuddha tattvas) are pre-individuation; the next seven (the Śuddhāśuddha tattvas, dominated by māyā and its five sheaths) introduce contraction and limitation; the last twenty-four (the Aśuddha tattvas) are puruṣa, prakṛti, the antaḥkaraṇas, the indriyas, the tanmātras, and the bhūtas.

Meykaṇṭār's Civañāṉa Pōtam (13th c., Tamil) preserves the same architecture in a slightly different metaphysical register, and Tirumūlar's Tirumantiram (~6th c.) maps the 36 tattvas onto the human body itself — an explicit body-cosmos isomorphism. Meykaṇṭār; Tirumūlar (Books 4–7).

§02 The symmetry-breaking homology

In modern cosmology the early universe is described as a sequence of symmetry breakings. At the GUT scale (~10⁻³⁶ s), the unified strong-electroweak symmetry breaks, depositing energy into the inflaton field. At the electroweak scale (~10⁻¹² s), the Higgs mechanism breaks SU(2)×U(1) into U(1)_EM, giving the W and Z bosons their mass. At QCD confinement (~10⁻⁶ s), quarks become bound into hadrons. Each transition is a descent: a higher-symmetry state condenses into a lower-symmetry one, and what was a single field manifests as several distinguishable phenomena. Weinberg (1996), chs. 19–21.

The 36-tattva cascade is structurally the same shape. Śiva-tattva is the un-broken unity; each subsequent tattva is generated by the loss of one degree of symmetry. The five sheaths of māyā (kalā, vidyā, rāga, kāla, niyati) are explicitly described as contractions of the all-pervasive freedom of consciousness — and Sanskrit saṅkoca ("contraction") is the term Kṣemarāja and Abhinavagupta use. Contraction is what symmetry-breaking does.

§03 The body-cosmos isomorphism — the Tamil-specific edge

Tirumūlar's contribution is structural, not metaphorical: the 36 tattvas map onto specific bodily loci, and the practitioner's task is to walk the descent in reverse. This is not "the body is a temple"-style poetry; it is a claim that the same architecture instantiates at every scale, from cosmos to organism. Modern physics has its own version of this claim — renormalisation group flow — which says that the same effective laws govern phenomena across enormous range of scale, with each scale "integrating out" the symmetries it cannot resolve. The Tamil tradition's body-cosmos isomorphism is the closest pre-modern parallel to a renormalisation-group sensibility.

§04 Why this needed its own dossier

Because the 36 tattvas are most often flattened in popular accounts into a list — varieties of stuff, ranked by subtlety. The structural reading recovers what the list was always doing: encoding a generative descent in which each level is the broken symmetry of the level above. The match to modern cosmology's broken-symmetry cascade is the strongest of the structural rhymes in this cluster.

§05 What is not being claimed

The 36 tattvas do not predict the Higgs mechanism. The Tirumantiram does not contain QFT. What is being claimed: that the structural insight — reality unfolds as a cascade of contractions of an originally undifferentiated field — was named, mapped, and contemplative-practised by a tradition more than a millennium before physics formalised the same shape. That is the finding. Nothing more, nothing less.
