Report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict in Sri Lanka (S/2006/1006)

First country-specific UN SG report on children and armed conflict in Sri Lanka, prepared under UNSCR 1612 (2005); covers 1 November 2005 – 31 October 2006. Records 5,794 cumulative LTTE child-recruitment cases on the UNICEF database since April 2001, with 1,598 believed still with the LTTE. Identifies the Karuna faction as a separate party from the LTTE — fn. 4: 'The unregistered political party, Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), which is led by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, a.k.a. Colonel Karuna, is more commonly known as the Karuna faction… The Karuna faction split from LTTE in the Eastern province in March 2004.' Records 164 new Karuna-faction cases as of 31 October 2006.
