Killing of Lasantha Wickrematunge (2009)

The January 2009 killing of the editor of The Sunday Leader in Colombo — the case that the UN Human Rights Committee in 2024 found Sri Lanka responsible for failing to investigate, in violation of the ICCPR.

The Wickrematunge case is the named-individual exception in /case — admitted only because the determination is a UN Treaty Body finding, on the public record, in his name. TLTE does not narrate the killing. The cited finding is the unit.

§1The UN finding

In 2024 the UN Human Rights Committee found that Sri Lanka had violated multiple ICCPR provisions in failing to conduct a prompt, effective and independent investigation into the killing. The finding is the published instrument and the citation route.
