Two thousand years across thirty kilometres of shoals. Each event glows by the strength of its evidence — Tier A burns gold, tradition is a faint ember. Legend is never evidence, and nothing here is a territorial claim or a prediction.

A Tamil-Brahmi cave inscription near Madurai names a householder from Eelam. The reading is strong; what “Eela” meant then is debated.

Cited in a Jaffna community history: the Indian cape nearest the island, days by sea. Not yet checked against the McCrindle translation.
- 7th–9th c. · StrongOne sacred landscape in song
The Tēvāram sings Rameswaram, Tirukkētīccaram (Mannar) and Tirukōṇamalai (Trincomalee) — both shores of the strait in one hymn-cycle.
- 11th c. · Tier AA temple already stood
Peer-reviewed study (JRAS 2023): a temple at Rameswaram since at least the 11th century; most present fabric is 17th–18th c.
- c. 1170 · MediumTwin shrines of one Lankan army
A Lankan army landed near Gandhamadana; Śaiva soldiers raised a Śiva shrine and a Sinhala commander a Buddhist one, side by side.
- 1187–96 · Tier AA Sinhala king's stone seat
Niśśaṅkamalla's Sinhala inscription survives inside the Rameswaram temple — both island courts honoured the shrine.
- 1284–1410 · StrongSetu coins · Guardian of the Setu
Copper coins with Nandi, crescent and Tamil “Setu”; Jaffna kings styled Cetukavalan. Modern majority attribution to Jaffna; an older view gives them to Ramnad.

Tradition credits Jaffna kings with the stone sanctum, granite cut at Trincomalee. Pathmanathan: the inscriptions are only “said to have been found”.

A Madurai gopuram inscription splits Rameswaram temple tax 2:3 with the Ariyar priests — the body Jaffna kings claimed descent from.
